Deck Building FAQ
-
▼ Do you offer free deck estimates?Yes. We provide free on-site estimates for all deck projects. During the visit, we review your space, discuss design options, materials, and provide a detailed written proposal.
-
▼ Do you handle permits and inspections?Yes. We handle the permit process and scheduling of inspections. Permit fees are paid by the homeowner, as costs vary by township.
-
▼ Which brands/materials do you suggest?
We commonly work with established decking manufacturers such as Trex, TimberTech, and Fiberon, depending on the customer’s budget, design preferences, and project requirements.
For composite decking, we like materials that provide durability, low maintenance, consistent appearance, and strong manufacturer warranties.
For framing, we typically use pressure-treated lumber along with appropriate structural hardware, galvanized connectors, bolts, flashing, and joist protection where required
-
▼ Do you offer eco-friendly/low-tox options for deck building?
Yes. Composite decking can be a good low-maintenance option, and many composite products incorporate recycled materials.
The major advantage is reduced maintenance compared with traditional wood. You don’t typically need the same level of staining or sealing.
The main considerations are the higher initial material cost and the fact that composite decking can behave differently than wood with temperature changes. We help homeowners compare the options based on appearance, budget, maintenance, and expected lifespan
-
▼ How long does a typical deck build take, and what can change that timeline?
A typical deck installation can take anywhere from several days to multiple weeks depending on the size and complexity of the project.
Factors that can affect the schedule include:
- Permit approval
- Weather
- Material availability
- Custom designs
- Footing requirements
- Stairs and multiple elevations
- Demolition
- Unexpected structural damage
- Inspections
We provide a projected schedule once the scope of work and permitting requirements are established
-
▼ What’s included and not included in a standard deck-building visit?
A standard deck consultation includes an evaluation of the existing area, measurements, discussion of layout and design options, material recommendations, and an estimate based on the project requirements.
Our proposals generally include labor, materials, installation, and job-related cleanup. When required, we can also handle the permit process, drawings, and inspection coordination.
Permit fees themselves are typically paid by the homeowner and depend on the municipality
-
▼ What certifications, licenses, or training set your team apart?
Our team has extensive hands-on construction experience, and we have been building and renovating outdoor spaces for more than a decade.
We also stay familiar with current construction requirements and manufacturer installation specifications. Our projects are overseen by an experienced project manager, with the goal of making sure the installation is completed correctly—not simply quickly.
Where licensing or permits are required by the municipality, we follow the applicable New Jersey requirements
-
▼ What warranties/guarantees do you offer?
Warranty coverage depends on the scope and materials used.
For projects where we install new framing and materials, applicable manufacturer warranties are passed along to the homeowner, and our workmanship warranty covers the work according to the terms of the contract.
For certain projects involving existing framing, we can provide a 10-year workmanship warranty on the framing we perform or modify, while new materials may carry longer manufacturer warranties.
The exact warranty terms are provided in the customer’s contract
-
▼ What financing, payment plans, or discounts do you offer?
Payment terms depend on the project and are clearly outlined in the contract.
For many projects, our standard payment structure is 30% deposit and 70% upon completion. Credit card payments may be subject to a 3.5% processing fee.
Any available discounts or promotional pricing are discussed directly with the customer and depend on the specific project
-
▼ Can you build decks year-round?
New Jersey weather can be tough on outdoor structures. Freeze-thaw cycles, heavy rain, snow, humidity, and temperature changes can all affect decking, framing, drainage, and foundations.
Footings need to account for local frost-depth requirements, and proper drainage and flashing are especially important to prevent water from getting into the structure or house.
Electrical work, lighting, and other components must also comply with applicable local and state requirements
-
▼ Do you remove old decks?
Yes. We provide full demolition and disposal of existing decks as part of deck replacement projects.
-
▼ What warning signs mean I need deck replacement now vs. it can wait?
Warning signs that deserve immediate attention include rotting structural framing, loose or damaged railings, unstable stairs, significant movement, deteriorated posts or footings, serious ledger damage, or areas where water has caused major structural deterioration.
Cosmetic issues such as faded decking, minor surface damage, or loose non-structural components may sometimes be repairable.
We recommend having the structure evaluated rather than waiting until a small problem becomes a major safety or structural issue
-
▼ Can you match my existing house or backyard style?Yes. We help you select colors, railings, stairs, and layouts that complement your home and outdoor space.
-
▼ What’s your usual response time, and how do you prioritize emergencies?
We try to respond to new inquiries as quickly as possible, typically within the same business day or within 24 hours depending on our workload.
Safety-related situations such as unstable railings, damaged stairs, structural movement, or other conditions that may create an immediate hazard are given priority
-
▼ Why choose Supreme Pro Decks?
- Experienced deck specialists
- High-quality materials
- Code-compliant construction
- Clear communication & written contracts
- Clean, professional workmanship
- Local New Jersey contractor you can trust
-
▼ How does Supreme Pro Decks communicate during jobs?
Communication is a major part of our process.
The customer has a direct point of contact throughout the project, and we communicate regarding scheduling, progress, inspections, material selections, and any unexpected conditions that are discovered.
We can also provide progress photos and updates during construction so the homeowner knows what is happening even when they are not at the property.
Our goal is simple: the customer should never have to wonder what is happening with their project.
-
▼ What preventative maintenance keeps decks in their top shape, and how often does it need to be done?
We recommend inspecting your deck at least once a year and paying particular attention to:
- Railings and stairs
- Connections and fasteners
- Areas around the ledger
- Flashing
- Drainage
- Framing
- Signs of rot or water damage
- Surface damage
Composite decking generally requires less maintenance than traditional wood, but it still benefits from regular cleaning and inspection.
-
▼ How do you decide when repair vs. replacement is best?
We look at the condition of the entire structure, not just the visible surface.
If the framing and foundation are structurally sound, repairing or replacing individual components may make sense. If there is widespread rot, structural deterioration, improper framing, or problems with the foundation or ledger, replacement may provide a safer and more cost-effective long-term solution.
Our goal is to recommend what makes sense for the property rather than automatically recommending a complete replacement.
-
▼ What factors affect the price of a new deck?
Several factors affect the final price, including:
- Deck size and height
- Shape and layout
- Type of decking
- Railing system
- Stairs and stair configuration
- Footings and foundation requirements
- Framing requirements
- Site accessibility
- Existing deck demolition
- Permits and drawings
- Drainage requirements
- Fascia, skirting, lighting, and other upgrades
Material selection is only one part of the price. The structural requirements and complexity of the installation can have a major impact as well.
